Step into a powerful musical journey that brings back to life the vibrant Yiddish repertoire performed by Jewish singers and actors in Sweden in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust. Many of these songs have not been heard since they were first performed more than seventy years ago.
When survivors arrived in Sweden in 1945, Yiddish culture began to be revived again. Swedish‑Jewish cultural figures, among them Cantor Leo Rosenblüth, visited the refugee camps, organising concerts and theatre evenings. Soon they were joined by renowned Polish-Jewish actors, singers, and writers—many recently returned from exile in the Soviet Union. Together they created performances that confronted trauma, honoured the dead, and imagined a future for Yiddish creativity. This concert revives that repertoire—music that carries the weight of destruction and the spark of survival. The songs include texts by Itsik Manger, Sholem Asch and Rokhl Korn.
Featuring internationally acclaimed performers Sasha Lurje (song), Craig Judelman (violin), Ilya Shneyveys (accordion), and Sofia Winiarski (song), the evening offers a rare chance to hear these rediscovered works performed live.
The concert forms part of Uppsala University’s research project “Witnessing for the Future: Holocaust, Sweden and Forgotten Early Testimonies”, funded by the Swedish Research Council, and showcases material brought to light by researcher Simo Muir.
Presented in collaboration with Judisk kultur i Sverige, the Institute for Holocaust Research in Sweden (IHRS) and Jiddischsällskapet i Stockholm, the event will be hosted by Lizzie Scheja, Karin Kvist Geverts and Simo Muir.
